In the book you are reading are the characters living in the past, future, or do they remain in the present time? What have you learned about this time period thus far? Do you think the world is better or worse off now?
In the book Hunger Games, the characters are living in the future. In the future, there are 12 districts (since district 13 got destroyed)and a Capital. The Capital controls the districts and has an event every year called the Hunger Games. In the Games, the 12 districts each, must sacrifice 1 girl and one boy to fight to the death and the last one standing wins many things for their district. Some of the districts are poor and starving and each have a different role. If any district rebels, they are eliminated by the Capital. Right now, the world is way better than in the future.
The book "The Outsiders" takes place a little bit in the past. The characters are from the fifties. I've learned that in this time period the kids can pretty much do whatever they want, Fourteen year olds are smoking and everyone can walk around at anytime without worring about pedifiles. However, they did havce to worry about getting jumped because of the society clash between rich people called socs and the poor people called greasers. plus you barely had to pay anything for food and other things. I think that the world was better off then it is now. We have to pay alot more for things which could end up causing us to go into an economical depression, we can't walk around by ourselves because there are to many bad things in the world, and we still have gang voilence but it is alot worse.
My book, The Outsiders, takes place in the distant past, in the 50's or 60's. The things I learned about this time period were that you were allowed to have fist-fights anytime, and they weren't as frowned upon as they are now, and that if you were poor or rich, you bitterly hated the other social classes. I think the world is beeter off now then it was in the book, because there isn't as much violence nowadays as there was then.
I think that the book "Hunger Games" takes place in the not-so distant future, after some kind of huge natural disaster (like the 2012 event) The world in the book is definitly not good compared to how we know the world today, almost everybody is in poverty and the capitol is sitting pretty being as arogant as can be. they also host the hunger games which is a HUGE event where 24 kids go to kill each other off.
In the misfits they are living in the present because evreything that is happening to them can just as easily happen to us.They are a group of kids that don't have a lot of friends and in real life there is groups like that. There are also fat kids in the book like Bobby. So thats why i think that they live in the present times.
I think our book is in the present because when I go to New York,I see what the author is talking about because some of the places he talks about i've been to and he describes it like it is.When he says that alot of crime happens or like he said a person thinks they're safe then next day in jail they meen it i've seen it happen in my old neiborhood and the stuff he talks about is recent like he says he had to get a digital camera they didnt have that in the past that is recent and his slang and the way his perspective.I think it is worse off now.
I think my book is in the presenst because it couldnt be in there future because the way slam described hood would not be like that in the future. In this time period i have learned that you are not always going to get what you want. I think the world is wosre now.
I think the book Slam is in the present time period because they have all the things that we have today. And I learned that in this time period its like today with everything that we have. I think the world is a better place now because we have alot more inventions then the olden days and we have more technology then we had in the past. Lik today we have nicer cars like they had in the book and a camcorder and present things like that. I also think the world is a better place because we have places for people to enjoy them sevles and there family with better places.
Ally you are right, your book's time period does sound different. I saw the movie for the outsiders and it is pretty intense whenever the two groups get into a fight. I guess the police just sort of let the kids handle things for themselves.
In my book, The Outsiders, takes place like 50 years back. I have learned that greasy hair was the style back then. And that people were lethal. gangsters probably were evrywhere. And they all carried weapons. If you attacked one of them, they would probably mess you up...bad. I dont think that this world is better today, alot more gangs but they stay more seceret.
The characters in my book are living in the present. I think that the world is worse now because a lot of upsetting and bad things have happened thus far. Like when Jolly got sexually harassed by her boss and fired. Sadly, that is one of the problems in working these days. You never know what employees will do. Also, the condition that jolly is in right now is one of the facts that make me think that the world if far worse now. She is living in a run down apartment with barley enough money to pay for toilet paper and diapers for her kids. She doesn't even have a high school diploma and Jolly does not even have a job. It's kinda sad how people will get pregnant at such a young age and not be able to take care of their own kids. That is another reason that the world is far worse now. More people are dropping out of school and not taking responsibility for themselves. Maybe in the future the world won't be as bad as it is now.
I think the book we are reading is present. I also think the world is worse now because prices have went up for every thing so people do not have enough money to buy what they want even if it is small. The world is alsobetter because we have more jobs available. So we will not have as many people living on the street and homeless. Thre still are some people homeless. Some teens in school are really good at basketball and can make it to the NBA but do not have good grades and not enough money to go to college. Some are just in the streets and dealing drugs to get money to get cloths and some thing to eat but they also they may be followers and just need attention so they join the streets to be know.
Norma! I completely agree with what your saying about how yucky the Hunger Games are. If I had to participate, I'd be dead in half an hour. I'm soooooo glad we don't have to deal with the Reaping in the present. I hope the government isn't that cruel in the future!
The setting in Make Lemonade is somewhat set in the present time maybe only a couple years ago. In the story, the characters are relatively poor and Jolly even lives in the "projects." To them, not having hot water, or going without basic neccessities such as food sometimes is just another cold hard fact in everyday life. Outside their front doors arent nice pretty picket fences, but rather creative graffiti messges from gangs and the neighborhood addicts. Fot the main characters, nothing is allowed to be taken for granted and everything must be earned then given. Todays society is better off in a way because there are more citizens who are willing to take a stand against things such as gang activity, but kids nowadays take waay too much for granted. Having a bed and a roof over our heads dont concern us too much and having those new jeans is a need while the characters needs are basic things as having food on the table.
In the book Fever 1793, the setting is in the past time.In the story, the characters are dealing with the yellow fever and many people are dieing from it. I have learned that it is much more dificult to survive after catching the yellow fever because of the less advanced medicine that they had.In the present time, we have more advanced medicine. So not as many people die from illness that may go around.
The Outsiders is set in the past. The story is about a kid named Ponyboy who is plopped into the middle of a gang war pretty much. The two sides are the Socs, who are rich and seem to have everything, and beat up "greasers" like Ponyboy just to have a good time. Greasers are poor, most of them smoke and fight, and are outcasts to society.
I'd say we have it better off nowadays. The boys in the story have to constantly worry about getting beat up if they home alone from the movies. Now that sort of thing is unheard of by a lot of people.
Isha, I agree with you cause in the present day there are a lot of people who are droping out of school. Then they aren't geting the money they need to pay for there daily neccessites and right now the world isn't as good as it should be.
The book "Outsiders" is set in the 50's. So far I've learned that gresers like Elvis and the socs like the Beatles. I think that our society is much better off than it was back then. In the book 14 year olds smoke freely on the side of the street. I don't think I could imagine seeing kids my sge just standing there smoking with no one questioning them. Now with a much more strict law system and everybody worrying about their health I rarely see adults smoking let alone kids.
My book "Fever 1973" takes place in the distant past, right after the Revolutionary War. In this period everybody has to work really hard and many people can't get jobs. There is little medicine or doctors, and the doctors they have aren't really educated. I believe we are better off now, as almost everyone has in education, and we have medicine for alot of illnesses.
The setting in make lemonade is the present but in this book the people are poor and really have no money at all.And this girl name jolly she has two kids to take care of.But she just got fired from her job and has no money for food to give to the kids and she cant get a job then the state will take her kids away untill she gets her act togethere
PJ, I agree with that the world is better off than it was back with all that violence. I also agree that back then the social classes did hate each other. While this barrier has been improved on I think that if you look around you can still put a one-word label to almost every single lunch table.
I partially agree with PJ that it was worse then than now. While I believe there is just as much violence now the police then just kind of accepted it while they're really cracking down on gangs now.
Isha I agree to what you say because if she doesnt have a job how is she going to take care of the baby's then jeremy and jilly. If she doesnt then the state will have to take the two kids from jolly untill she gets a job and also gets her act togethere.
In the book "The Outsiders" they live in the past id say around 1960's maybe and i think that it isn't better then it was then or how it is now because in this book people are always boozed up and in the world now people are alwys boozed up and then the kids always smoked and drank and had pocket knives and they droped out of school and. Also in the world today most of that stuff still happens and so don't think that any of them are better.
My book "Fever" takes place in the 1700's the times back then seemed pretty rough and i am really glad that we live the way we do and have the things we do. In the story there is an epidemic consisting of the Yellow Fever there is little medicine and doctor assistance. If your not sick with the fever you are doing back breaking labor trying to satisfy everyones needs and wants. In my opinion the present time of 2009 is so much better than the past!
In the book money hungry the people would be living in the present because they have a lot of mondern day stuff such as phones buses and several other thing but most inmportant is that they are in a some what good period of time becasue Rasberry and here mom where homeless but now they are in a home now, they dont make a lot of money but enough to pay the bills. I think they are better off now because they have a place to live they have food they are better off then ever befor.
In my book Slam the story seems to take place in the present. I believe this because the names they have are current. Also, in the story the way they speak and the slang language that they use is helping to prove that the story is taking place in present time. If this book was in the future I would be worried and not looking forward to the future. If this was the past I would like to figure out what we would be looking forward to in the future.
in the book make lemonade the people are living in the present.i say this because in the book some of the people are stugleing with money problems and two kids.the other character is struggleing with what to do with her money she made from babysitting the other person's kids that needs money.
I have to disagree that the social order bitterly hate one another because Cherry Valance and her friend liked the company of the Greasers. I agree with the world being better off though, people back then would just knock each other's teeth in for looking the wrong way.
I agree with AJ. I mean, could you imagine having to take care of people and doing all that work which in the end u will probally end up with the fever? It sounds horrid, and imagine if you had the fever? I loath being sick, It's gross.
My book, Hunger Games, takes place in the future. The setting is about the 12 Districts of Panem (what use to be Earth) and its high tech Capitol. There is a special event held once every year known as the Hunger Games where 2 competiters from the 12 Districts fight to kill and survive to bring food back to their families since everyone is practically a slave. I learned that it takes a lot of effort to be able to live a normal life against starvation and disease. I think Panem is worse than Delaware because there is no event which makes kid 12-16 years compete and fight to the death for entertainment.
I agree with Norma about our world being better than those in the Hunger Games. Our home doesn't make young children fight. I wouldn't kill anyone if it didn't benefit me and I could imagine myself getting killed first.
I think at the end slam will get a degree to go play in a proffesional basketball leage.Or and his team and him will win yhe championship if the book is short.
In my book Money Hungry it takes place in the present because the Raspberry lives in a broken down part of the city because the book dosent say anything about cellphones but they live in a spot were people dont have a lot of money so people do not have those things. but the school system seems the same as ours so that makes me think that they are in the present.
my book is based of the futur and its so bad couse the once every year the pick 24 people to compete in this thing called the hunger games and its a comepetition where you fight the death!so I think the world whould be alot better off mainly becouse its children who have to compete so everybody one below 18 whhould have to compete no matter what so im pretty sure the world whould be much better off
my book is in the late 90's.My book is about a boy who has that has bad grades. Also my main charater likes playing basketball. I like football and basketball and it is ok.He wants to play in the NBA and so do i if i do not go to the NFL.I am ok at basketball game. but im not the best basketball player in the world
In the book "Fever", the time frame is form the 1700's, so there fore my book atkes place in the past. Ally, i totally want to read your book, it really sounds interesting to me. Its reminds me of this movie we watched in class one day. It was about theise boys who seem just like you decribed it. They smoked, and did all the bad stuff just like you said, fill me in on what happens next.
The book "Yellow Fever", takes place in the past, where a fever has taken the city of Philadelphia by storm. Unprepared for such a crisis, thousands are quickly struck down, with the doctors having their hands full with fever victims. I think the world is better off in the present because nowadays very few sicknesses take so many lives, and the ones that do, we find a cure for rather quickly.
based on my story i still think people are living in the past because in the book there still getting called names from what happened three years ago.......
in Fever the charaters live in the past and they fight a dangerous coid that kills citiens. I think this cold is still out there but with the worid having medicince to cure colds
The time period is the present. What I've learned from the book is that everything is really simple. Everyone around where she lives is mad friendly(honestly it is kind of scary and I don't like it). Also everyone is chipper and one event causes a whole upscure
In the book Hunger Games, the characters are living in the future. In the future, there are 12 districts (since district 13 got destroyed)and a Capital. I think the world is better off in the present because nowadays very few sicknesses take so many lives, and the ones that do, we find a cure for rather quickly.
ReplyDeletebased on my story i still think people are living in the past because in the book there still getting called names from what happened three years ago.......
ReplyDeletein Fever the charaters live in the past and they fight a dangerous coid that kills citiens. I think this cold is still out there but with the worid having medicince to cure colds
ReplyDeleteI agree rafael, the fever in the book kills people andi like to live in the presant where there is hardly any sickness just like you said
ReplyDeleteThe time period is the present. What I've learned from the book is that everything is really simple. Everyone around where she lives is mad friendly(honestly it is kind of scary and I don't like it). Also everyone is chipper and one event causes a whole upscure
